Nebraska Sigma Zeta Education Foundation, Incorporated Programs Narrative

Mission Statement

The Nebraska Sigma Zeta Education Foundation, Incorporated is a not-for-profit organization that seeks to educate and empower its surrounding community through social action, community consciousness, economic development, and scholarship. 

SOCIAL ACTION PROGRAMS:

In the area of Social Action, the Nebraska Sigma Zeta Education Foundation, Incorporated will implement the following programs:

Σ       Together Preventing Premature Births, Teenage Pregnancy and Building Strong Fathers

Ø       What is the activity?
This program will be a collaborative venture with the members of the Nebraska Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity and the March of Dimes, Nebraska Chapter.  This program will have three main areas of focus:
 
1) Premature birth awareness and prevention.
2) Teenage pregnancy prevention.

romoting healthy lifestyles choices for new and expectant fathers.

Σ       Sigma Wellness Project

Ø       What is the activity?
This program will be a multi-faceted, collaborative venture with the members of the Nebraska Sigma Education Foundation, the members of the Nebraska Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, various health care institutions in the state of Nebraska, the American Cancer Society and various African-American churches in the state of Nebraska.  The primary goal of this program is to promote and encourage African-Americans in Nebraska to live healthier lifestyles through education.

Σ       Sigma Project Vote

Ø       What is the activity?
This program will be a social action effort to better educate citizens in our surrounding communities on the importance of participating in the democratic process. Members of the Nebraska Sigma Education Foundation along with the members of the Nebraska Chapters of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity will conduct non-partisan voter education activities and prepare non-partisan voter education materials for the sole purpose of encouraging citizens in our surrounding communities to better understand and regularly participate in democratic voting process to ensure their voices are heard.

Z   The Stork's Nest Program

Ø       What is the activity?
This program will be a collaborative venture with the members of the Nebraska Chapters of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Nebraska Medical Center and the March of Dimes, Nebraska Chapter.  This program will have three main areas of focus:

Motivates women to get early, regular prenatal care through earned incentives.

Educates women on self-care during pregnancy, childbirth, and postpartum.

Provides prenatal education and incentives to low income pregnant women.

Z   Z-Hope (Zetas Helping Other People Excel)

Ø       What is the activity?
 Z-HOPE is an outreach service program that is designed to enhance, cultivate, and empower participants to develop health promoting lifestyle choices across the lifespan. Z-HOPE has ten programmatic elements it chooses to address:                  

·         Responsible Sexual Behavior

·         Immunization

·         Tobacco Use

·         Access to Health Care

·         Environmental Quality

·         Physical Activity

·         Substance Abuse

·         Obesity

·         Injury And Violence

·         Mental Health

BIGGER AND BETTER BUSINESS PROGRAMS:

In the area of Bigger and Better Business, the Nebraska Sigma Education Foundation, Incorporated will implement the following program:  

Σ       Project S.E.E.D. (Sigma Economic Empowerment Development)

Ø       What is the activity?
This program will be a Bigger and Better Business effort to better educate citizens in our surrounding communities on the importance of better understanding two socioeconomic areas, personal finance management and home ownership.  The primary objective of Project S.E.E.D. is to provide useful information in the area of personal financial management and home ownership via FREE workshops to benefit the members in our surrounding communities.

EDUCATION PROGRAMS:

In the area of Education, the Nebraska Sigma Education Foundation, Incorporated will implement the following program:

Σ       Omaha Sigma Beta Club Youth Mentoring & College
      Scholarship Program
 

Ø       What is the activity?
This mentoring program will focus on developing the skill set of at-risk males between ages 8 and 18 who reside in our local communities in four major areas:  Education, Culture, Social and Athletics.  It is our expectation that by taking a serious interest in young men at this critical stage in their lives will allow us to assist their parents by re-enforcing a strong sense of community and family values, strong leadership skills, and social & cultural awareness that will better groom them as community leaders of tomorrow.  In addition to mentoring at-risk young men who reside in our local communities, through our Education program we will also offer them opportunities to earn college scholarships to further their education.

Z   Zeta Phi Beta Youth Mentoring & College Scholarship
       Program

Ø       What is the activity?
The youth auxiliaries focus on developing the skill set of at-risk females between ages 5 and 18 who reside in our local communities in three major areas:  Education, Service, and Social.  These auxiliaries, dedicated solely to girls are organized into three distinct age groups:

·         Pearlettes           girls 5 to 8 years old
·         Amicettes           girls 9 to 13 years old
·         Archonettes       girls 14 to 18 years old

The objectives of these youth groups are to assist these girls in developing life skills that will better prepare them for success in the real world.  In addition to mentoring these young girls who reside in our local communities, through our Education program we will also offer them opportunities to earn college scholarships to further their education.
